& Urge The FDA To Investigate “Natural Flavors” In Seltzers & Sparkling Waters

Across America, millions of people drink seltzer and sparkling water every day believing it’s one of the cleanest, simplest beverages available — just water and bubbles. But --according to wide reporting-- behind the vague label term “natural flavors” lies an industry loophole that allows dozens, sometimes hundreds, of undisclosed chemical compounds to be added to drinks without transparency to consumers.

These flavorings can include solvents, preservatives, and additives derived through industrial processes — all still legally marketed under the friendly term “natural.” Beverage companies are not required to disclose what these flavorings actually contain, how they’re produced, or what potential health effects may come from long-term exposure or mixing different flavoring bases.

Seltzie and its loyal customers are calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to:

  1. Launch a full review and investigation into the chemical composition and sourcing of “natural flavors” used in the seltzer and sparkling water industry.

  2. Require transparent ingredient labeling, including full disclosure of all flavoring compounds used in beverages labeled as “natural.”

  3. Establish new standards that limit the use of misleading language in beverages marketed as “just water” or “natural.”

  4. Fund independent toxicology and exposure studies to ensure that these additives meet modern safety standards and do not undermine consumer trust in clean-label products.
